Beware of the wonderful bluish reflections that you will see this summer by the sea, it may be an agglomerate of plastic, plasticroutes.
Behind this name that makes you smile hides fine flakes of plastic which become embedded in the rocks and become integrated into the mineral ecosystem.

Risk area

On the island of Madeira, in Portugal, nearly 10% of the rocks have already been covered and the phenomenon could intensify in the years to come.


These crusts are primarily made of polyethylene, a plastic found in packaging, construction materials or medical equipment.

And now ?

Researchers are closely studying the phenomenon which could have disastrous consequences on the marine ecosystem. In short, don't be fooled by this funny name, plastic roads are a worrying new phenomenon caused by plastic pollution.
